What is topping?
Let’s first explain what topping is and when to top weed plant. Topping is the act of removing the main stem from the cannabis plant.
Before topping, the plant expends all its energy on growing the main shoot. The shoot that was removed will not be replaced. Instead, the energy is used to grow the side shoots.
Instead, it forms an inverted triangular shape with more buds at the top where they are exposed to more grow light. Two new colas are also developed at the top of the plant where it was topped.
How to top your cannabis plants?
Always top during vegging. Topping seedlings can lead to their death or worse, stunting their growth. It can also cause damage to your plants if you do it during flowering.
After they have reached 3 to 5 nodes, it is best to top-dress your weed plants. They will be strong enough to overcome the shock of being cut once they reach this size. To give your plant time to heal from the previous topping, wait at least one week before you top it again.
How to Top weed plant?
It is important to use a sharp, sterilized blade when trimming your plants, even topping them. You should not use a regular pair, as they can crush the stem. Instead, you should cut it straight.
A pair of weed-cutting scissors such as these is ideal. These scissors are very affordable and do the job well.
A razor blade is also an option, but you should consider using trimming shears if you want to grow weed. You can sterilize any tool you choose by either using UV light or alcohol.
For a top-of-the-line look, cut the stem just above the lateral branches. The main stem will stop growing after it has been trimmed. The two side nodes will now be colas.
Within a week, each branch will be sufficiently grown to be able to be topped. Continue the same process. Each of these branches will become two more colas. You can continue topping the colas until the canopy is where you want.
